Puerto Rican reggaeton super star Daddy Yankee, author of the hit “Gasolina”, announced Friday that he had reached an agreement with his wife to regain control of his companies after accusing her of having embezzled $100 million.
The interpreter of “Despacito” with Luis Fonsi, recently announced on social networks his divorce from Mireddys González after 29 years of marriage.
The 47-year-old singer launched proceedings against his wife and her sister, Ayeicha, accusing them of having taken $80 million from the accounts of El Cartel Records and another 20 million from his other company Los Cangris without his authorization. .
Daddy Yankee, whose real name is Ramón Ayala Rodríguez, asked the courts to grant him control of the companies he founded and access to information and accounts concerning them, according to a court document consulted by AFP.
After hearing from both parties, Judge Anthony Cuevas asked them to reach an agreement. After a little over an hour of private discussions, Daddy Yankee announced to reporters that he was regaining control of his companies.
“It is a process that I carried out with a lot of peace and a lot of tranquility,” said the singer who asked to respect Ms. González.
His lawyers specified that the transfer of functions between Mireddys González, head of El Cartel Records, and the singer would take place on December 26.
Daddy Yankee and his wife also decided that the resources in the company's bank accounts would remain intact for an unspecified period of time and that in the future, any transactions over $100,000 would have to be authorized by both parties. Mireddys González will remain a shareholder.
Carlos Díaz Olivo, the singer's lawyer, explained that he could “not continue his career” without full access to his companies, accusing the González sisters of lacking financial transparency.
Mireddys González's lawyer, Luis Sánchez Betances, denied the accusations of embezzlement, speaking of “dividends” of $100 million distributed equally between his client and Daddy Yankee.
With his hit “Gasolina”, released in 2004, Daddy Yankee popularized reggaeton, which became a global phenomenon with stars like Bad Bunny, a compatriot, and the Colombians Maluma and Karol G.
Daddy Yankee bowed out of the music scene with an extensive tour in 2023 but has since released a few singles.
