For the holidays, an English teacher from Haute-Savoie will send with her class greeting cards addressed to King Charles III as well as William and Kate.
Writing to the British royal family for the holidays is the project of an English professor from the Jacques-Prévert college in Gaillard, in Haute-Savoie. As the end of year holidays approach, Constance Koenig plans with her sixth grade class to send greeting cards to Charles III as well as William and Kate.
“We will send the cards directly to Buckingham Palace for King Charles III and to Kensington for the Prince and Princess of Wales,” she told France Bleu.
With this initiative, Constance Koenig hopes to put “glitter” in her students’ eyes, but above all to make them work on their English. “It’s an opportunity to work on very simple phrases like ‘Happy New Year’ or ‘I wish you a Merry Christmas’. There, the goal is really for them to put it into practice instead of it remaining in class,” she assures.
“Last year, we received a response”
But this is not Constance Koenig’s first attempt. Last year, she had already approached the British royal family during the holidays with another sixth grade class and received a response.
“Last year, (…) we received a response from the Prince and Princess of Wales, in March 2024, with a small card in an envelope stamped with the Buckingham Palace jump. They thanked us for the messages Christmas and in return they wished them good wishes for the year,” says Constance Koenig.
On the royal family’s website, it is specified that anyone can send a letter to King Charles III or Prince William, but some rules must nevertheless be respected. You must first begin your letter with “Sir” and end it with a polite phrase such as “I have the honor to be, Sir, the humble and obedient servant of Your Majesty”.
In 2023, an Alsatian couple, who had written to King Charles III to congratulate him after his coronation, received a response from the monarch. The latter also received more than 7,000 letters after the announcement of his cancer.
