Britain's King Charles III, 76, attended the 112e edition of the Royal Variety Performance, a charity show initiated in 1912 by King George V. This charity gala is organized for the benefit of the Royal Variety Charity, an organization which helps artists in the United Kingdom in difficulty, due to health or due to other personal problems. This November 22, 2024, King Charles III should have been accompanied by Queen Camilla but the arrival of his wife had been canceled a little earlier in the day. Buckingham Palace announced, via a press release, that Queen Camilla would not be present, on orders from her doctor.
Queen Camilla suffers from a lung infection which started several weeks ago. After a period of convalescence, the wife of King Charles III had again undertaken some engagements in recent days. Queen Camilla notably caused a sensation this Tuesday by attending the reception of the diplomatic corps wearing the rare aquamarine tiara of Queen Elizabeth II. Obviously, Queen Camilla has not yet fully recovered and it was better for her to cancel her visit this Friday evening.

Sir Elton John and Swiss Eurovision winner Nemo meet Charles III
It was therefore alone that King Charles III found an audience of celebrities at the Albert Hall. Sir Elton John was there, as well as the presenter Charlene White, the comedian Alan Carr, the former model Penny Lancaster and the young musical prodigy Jack Philpott. The show, which mixed singing, theater and even magic, opened with a performance by singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Swiss singer Nemo, winner of Eurovision, was present and was able to greet the sovereign when Charles III met all the artists at the end of the performance.
Every year, the royal family attends the Royal Variety Performance. In 2022, it was the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, still Earl and Countess of Wessex, who represented the royal family. In 2023, Prince William and Princess Catherine attended the evening. They were then accompanied by another heir couple, that of Sweden, taking advantage of a stay of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel in London.
