Guest of TV5 Monde on the occasion of the release of her book, Bambou spoke about her life with Serge Gainsbourg and talks about the not so happy behind the scenes of the song Love on the beat.
A not so happy memory… Bamboo was the guest of TV5 Monde on the occasion of the release of her autobiographical book entitled Step by step through the night, in which she looks back on her difficult childhood, her drug addictions, but also her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg. A love story which of course had an impact on the musical productions of the famous singer, who died in 1991. For example, we can hear the former model on the title Love on the beat, a rather special collaboration if Bambou’s story is to be believed.
Bambou goes behind the scenes of Serge Gainsbourg's hit Love on the beat
Questioned by Patrick Simonin, the 65-year-old woman returned to the underside of this hit which has passed through generations, but which was not a cakewalk for her: “I was recorded without my knowledge. I didn't know it. I discovered it at the same time as the musicians“, she assured the slightly surprised journalist. “That is to say, I discovered it in the studio. I was very embarrassed. It was Serge who recorded me, he said we were going to put it on the record. He told me it was I love you neither power of a thousand… I'm not so sure but anyway. It’s true that the lyrics are pretty. The title is strong… it brings back memories“, she ended up admitting when she heard the song broadcast on set. But the audio recording of these famous screams was not the only disappointment for Bambou, who regrets having had to undress for the clip: “I was a bit angry because he wanted me to be shirtless and I didn't like it… I had no choice. I was almost being blackmailed“, she confided.
Bambou recounts the difficult collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and Alain Chamfort
In the rest of the interview, Bambou also talks about the very complicated collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and Alain Chamfort. “Serge was used to working quickly. Every day, he waited for Chamfort's music to write the lyrics and Chamfort told me: 'You'll tell Serge that I had no inspiration last night.'” she recalled. Once in the studio, the two men once again had some differences. That's it, it's over Chamfort sent the music cassettes to Serge, but Serge was already on Catherine Deneuve's album. He called Chamfort to tell him the texts of the songs… It was a bit folkloric…“, she admitted.
