It's no secret that Gilles Lellouche doesn't keep his tongue in his pocket. And when it comes to talking about women in the film industry, the famous director has no filter!
Over the years, Gilles Lellouche has become an essential figure of the 7th French art. On October 16, 2024, the filmmaker who also thrives as an actor unveiled his long-awaited latest film: phew love
brilliantly carried by Adèle Exarchopoulos and François Civil.
Gilles Lellouche speaks frankly about women in cinema
In 2016, during an interview given to Telerama and long before the emergence of the #MeToo movement, Jean-Dujardin's great friend had denounced the sexism which is rife, to his great chagrin, in the cinema industry : “I lived with some actresses, so I witnessed atrocious things. A director, because he has a love scene planned in his film, asks the actress to get naked in his office to see how he will film it… I'm not surer that we ask so much of an actor”.
“It’s always the man who makes you laugh and the woman who laughs”
According to his statements, if the interested parties refuse, it is common that the directors then turn against them. Having witnessed countless memorable scenes, Gilles Lellouche regrets that his colleagues are constantly denigrated on many levels. “And the roles! It's obvious: women are either gimmicks or castrators. In French comedy, it is always the man who makes you laugh and the woman who laughs. Cinema is full of stereotypes (…)”, regretted the brother of Philippe Lellouche.
The hidden side of cinema evoked without filter
With transparency, the ex-companion of Mélanie Doutey also revealed the reason why the actresses show themselves
generally “discreet about their private life”.“An actress who is very much in love interests a director less than a single actress. I can understand: a film is a matter of charm, of possession, a bubble where the director wants to have the actress all to himself.” analyzed Gilles Lellouche. “We must still remember that cinema is the only profession where everyone hugs each other without knowing each other!”
“Which actress do you want to sleep with?”
In his eyes, “the actress is an object of desire, but the problem is that there are elegant directors and others.” Faithful to his values, the father has already refused projects without blinking an eye when filmmakers crossed the red line.
“There is a lot of vulgarity in the world of cinema, unfortunately. One day, a director asked me to choose my partner in a film in these terms: “Which actress do you want to sleep with?” He was joking, supposedly. I didn't make his film”, thus concluded the star. A frank statement!
