After Donald Trump's victory in the American presidential election, announced on Wednesday November 6, the actor was the subject of multiple inflammatory messages on X.

“It's all George Clooney's fault!”, we can read on the social network Wednesday November 6. The origin of this controversy? A column entitled “I love Joe Biden. But we need a new candidate”, published by the hero of Monuments Men (2014) in the New York Times in the month of July. The comedian then called on Joe Biden to abandon the presidential campaign. “We are not going to win in November with this president,” he wrote. The head of state subsequently gave up running for a second term, before Kamala Harris succeeded him.

Backlash

Some Internet users criticized the way in which George Clooney had influenced the presidential election – going so far as to blame him for the defeat of the Democratic candidate. “Someone bring me George Clooney,” tweeted @altNOAA. We need to…talk.”

Journalist Joshua Hartley, for his part, shared a screenshot of the column published by the actor. “Thank you George Clooney,” he quipped. And @fritzdeelman added: “Trump should not forget to thank Hollywood celebrities. Especially George Clooney.”

“As I am in the midst of depression and I want to attack someone, what is George Clooney's plan now?”, launched @52Variables. A real boon for Donald Trump's followers, who for their part were quick to thank Amal Clooney's husband.

“I just thought about it, but we didn't express our gratitude to George Clooney for this victory!”, added another Internet user. For her part, Laurence F. Maslon, professor at New York University, recently declared to Guardian : “I think celebrity endorsements of candidates did more for the stars than for those they supported.” Enough to tarnish the political future that some tabloids predict for George Clooney.
