Tim Alexander, the iconic drummer of Primus, left the group suddenly, leaving fans and colleagues in confusion. Alexander, who joined Primus from the beginning and returned several times, revealed in an interview for Rolling Stone that this decision was motivated by a pressing need to prioritize his mental and physical health.
A need for renewal for an exhausted musician
At 59, Alexander says years of intensive touring and performing have seriously affected his well-being. “I am in constant pain. My body hurts, my hands, my back… After almost four decades of drumming, I feel the weight of all these years,” he confides. In addition to the physical wear and tear, Alexander admits to going through an emotionally difficult period and feeling a lot of loneliness during the tours.

“A way of love”
In a letter addressed to his fans and former Primus colleagues, Alexander describes his choice as an act of love towards himself and those close to him. “I have chosen a path of love for myself, my family and the life I want to build for the future. I had lost the passion for acting, but what really motivated me to leave was the need to take care of myself and give those close to me the attention they deserve.” This departure, which he hopes will inspire others, marks a decisive turning point in his life.
A departure that invites reflection
Alexander also talks about the challenges of the music industry and the lack of emotional support for artists. “At the time, we didn't talk about the impact of this life on us. We lost so many talented musicians because of this.” Today, he wants to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of yourself, especially in a sector where pressures are intense and where mental health is too often neglected.
For its part, Primus announced that musicians from affiliated groups, such as Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, will take over for upcoming concerts. The tour Sixtywhich kicks off in April, will also see Tool drummer Danny Carey join Primus for a string of marquee dates.
