Comedian Gad Elmaleh buys the famous Parisian cabaret

Comedian and actor Gad Elmaleh is preparing to buy the legendary Parisian cabaret “Chez Michou”. This emblematic place in Montmartre has been in liquidation since July, four years after the death of its famous founder.

“Chouchou” sets down his bags at Michou’s house. Comedian Gad Elmaleh was chosen by the courts to buy the business of the emblematic cabaret in the 18th arrondissement “Chez Michou”, placed in compulsory liquidation for several months, with its 23 employees made redundant. The emblematic Montmartre venue has been struggling to make ends meet since the death of its owner with blue glasses in 2020.

“GAD WILL MAKE IT A VERY NICE PLACE”

If the Mecca of Parisian nights will not reopen as a transformist cabaret, Gad Elmaleh “will make it a place of comedy and humor, while keeping the soul of the place,” the communications service explained to AFP. of the actor. On the other hand, the “Chez Michou” brand will not be owned by the comedian, made famous for his blond sketches.

News that delights Catherine Catty-Jacquart, Michou’s niece. “Gad Elmaleh will continue to bring to life “80 rue des Martyrs” which has fallen into good hands as Michou would have liked. We would have been unfortunate if the place became anything other than a cabaret,” she declared, delighted.

“It will no longer be called “Chez Michou”, but Gad will make it a very beautiful place. It’s a very good thing to turn the page, by taking a turn,” she told AFP.

A new comedy club for “Chouchou d’la place

A true cradle of transformism, “Chez Michou” featured a succession of shows punctuated by the “Michettes”, transvestites parodying stars of French song like Sylvie Vartan, Johnny Hallyday or Dalida. A show reminiscent of the cult feature film “Chouchou”, the story of an Algerian transvestite imagined and played by… Gad Elmaleh.

The comedian from “La Doublure” therefore adds his name to the long list of kings of laughter who have invested in Parisian comedy sets, after Jamel Debouzze (“Le Jamel Comedy Club”) or more recently Kev Adams (“Le Fridge” ).

A takeover going against the last wishes of the “Blue Prince of Montmartre”? In his memoirs published in 2017, Michou expressed his wish that his cabaret would not survive him. “I want this house to disappear with me. It may seem pretentious but the cabaret will not survive me,” he assured. A few months before his death, he finally changed his mind under pressure from the “Michettes”.
