They have known each other for a very long time. Arielle Dombasle and Julie Depardieu, respectively president and member of the jury of the Dinard British and Irish Film Festival, clearly found each other well. A cinematic alchemy that they display with joy in interviews.

Arielle Dombasle, why did you agree to be president of the jury this year?

AD: “I had already been president of the American festival in Deauville, and then I was president several times for “Chéries, Chéris”, the LGBT film festival. And each time, I did such astonishing discoveries! Films that we sometimes only see once, in this highly specialized festival. It’s an honor. We are in a country where film criticism is so advanced, so important. That’s it. We have debates among ourselves, we talk about cinema and it’s fascinating.”

And you too Julie, do you enjoy seeing films that we only see there?

JD: “Yes, and especially British cinema. Me, unlike Arielle, I haven’t done that many festivals, perhaps because once I had a very bad experience where I didn’t I didn’t agree with anyone, but here, with Arielle as president, I say yes.”

AD: “And what’s more, we barely need to speak with Julie. One look and we know what we like and what we don’t like. Julie is poetry, a a true, extremely fine artist, who goes into new territory. She is also practically the only one in France to have this knowledge of music, of theatricality, of literature. She is someone so astonishing, she is unique. .

JD: “The first meeting with Arielle was musical, a long time ago. We were on a film and I decided that it was my jukebox, because she knew all the great tunes opera that I loved. I kept chasing her. It was as if I was putting on the play and she was singing everything I wanted. finds her extraordinary, but that’s nothing new, and in my life, she has a very important role. She’s an elf, a lucky charm and someone in whom I trust blindly.

What is special about British cinema for you both?

AD: “It’s a cinema that has given us extraordinary authors, including David Lynch, Ridley Scott and Mike Leigh. They are extremely lively filmmakers, very important for world cinema in general and they are not helped like us they are in France, so they fight and they succeed in films that remain. I, the film Blade Runner, will never forget it.

JD: “Or any Ken Loach. He’s a strong spirit, I think.”

AD: “And there, we have members of the jury who are so fine, refined, sensitive, that it’s the best.”
