Who is Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, close friend of Prince Harry?

“We grew up with kids our age, like all kids. We sometimes traveled miles to round up cattle, so we could understand the lives of the herd boys. So we learned to be grateful for their work.” Prince Seeiso is the second son of King Moshoeshoe II and Queen Mamohato of Lesotho, younger brother of the current ruler, King Letsie III. Born on April 16, 1966, he was raised in a family that held high the values of humility and simplicity, as he explained to the Lesotho Times when he spoke about his childhood.

Qualities which probably seduced Prince Harry from their first meeting in 2004. The youngest son of Charles III is taking a sabbatical on the eve of his 20th birthday and goes, among other places, to Lesotho, one of the poorest countries from Africa. Harry and Seeiso are 18 years apart but have several things in common. They are both “alternates”, brother of the king for one and future king for the other. And both studied in Britain. Prince Seeiso benefited from the Chevening Scholarship which allows students from 144 different countries to enroll in universities in England. After high school, Seeiso embarked on a Masters in International Relations at the University of Birmingham. In 2003, he married Machaka Makara who became Princess Mabereng with whom he had three children.

The same year, he lost his mother, Mamohato Bereng Seeiso, who died of a heart attack at the age of 62. A tragedy that brings him closer to Prince Harry, orphaned by Princess Diana since 1997. When they meet, the connection immediately passes. In Lesotho, Prince William’s brother visits the Mats’ase Children Home, a children’s center. He is touched by the distress of the children, especially that of Mutsu Potsane, 4 years old, whose parents have just died of AIDS.

“People in Britain don’t know much about Lesotho. Africa is in bad shape, but the situation here is even more worrying than elsewhere. These people who are suffering show incredible dignity. It’s impossible to “don’t reach out to them to help them build a health center”, said Prince Harry at the end of his trip in 2004. Two years later, Prince Seeiso and Charles’ son. III united to found Sentebale. The word means Don’t forget mea reference to both of their mothers. The NGO aims to help orphans and young people suffering from AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. For almost 20 years, the two men have organized polo tournaments or charity events together to raise funds for the association, such as this major concert which took place in the gardens of Kensington Palace in London in 2016.

Although he had promised to return to Lesotho every year, Prince Harry had not been there for five years. Between Megxit and Covid, it is difficult for him to find the time necessary to organize this trip which allows him to meet the volunteers of his association. This 1is October, it was with undisguised joy that he found his friend Seeiso and all the Sentebale teams, around a campfire before several days of meetings across the country, as well as in South Africa, to promote the NGO. Seeiso and Harry, two princes, two friends, who walk hand in hand in the footsteps of their mothers.
