The happiness of one person causes the misfortune of others. Like every year, several major Hollywood stars and renowned filmmakers were not selected among the Oscar finalists which were revealed Thursday morning. Here are six of the biggest forgotten items from the 2025 vintage.

After several years away from the spotlight, the 57-year-old Canadian actress made a notable return to film The last cabaret dancer and several pundits expected it to be rewarded with an Oscar nomination. The former star of the legendary TV series Alert to Malibu however, did not manage to sneak into the finalists for the best actress award.
Angelina Jolie

Considered a big favorite for the Oscar for best actress a few months ago for her performance as the famous singer Maria Callas in the biographical drama MariaAngelina Jolie was finally excluded from the list of finalists. The five nominations in this category instead went to Demi Moore (La Substance), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofia Gascon (Emilia Perez), Mikey Madison (Anora) and Fernanda Torres (I’m still here).
Nicole Kidman

To everyone’s surprise, Nicole Kidman was also shunned in the best actress category. The 57-year-old Australian star won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in the erotic thriller Babygirl.

A regular at the Oscars (he has won the prized statuette on two occasions in the past), Denzel Washington seemed to have his place assured in the best supporting actor category for his performance as the evil arms dealer in the sequel to Gladiator. However, the 70-year-old veteran actor was outplayed by several newcomers, including Yura Borisov (Anora) and Kieran Culkin (A real pain).

Even though he was nominated for an Oscar for best film as a producer, the Quebec filmmaker bit the dust in the best director category for his work in Dune: Part Two. We remember that Villeneuve suffered the same fate three years ago for the first part of Duneeven if the film was cited in 10 categories. His only nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director dates back to 2017, for the science fiction film Arrival.
