Dambient role for a record. Jacques Audiard is somewhere between Brazil and Uruguay when the Oscar nominations are announced in Los Angeles, where the fires have started again and where neighborhoods close to Hollywood are still evacuated. It is 5:30 a.m. this Thursday, January 23, in Beverly Hills, when the presenters of the express ceremony announce the results of the votes in a hotel lounge where the public is in evening wear and slaps, slightly apathetic. The Oscars, we are told, will take place on Sunday March 2 on Hollywood Boulevard. They will pay tribute to “the spirit of resistance and community” of the cinema industry, which is trying to find its senses in the midst of the ashes.

Not sure that the 2025 vintage, which could not be more atypical, will bring balm to his heart. Because it is a Frenchman who wins the prize and brings in his wake a cohort of art-house films on which the studios would not have bet heavily. With 13 nominations, Emilia Perez did better than at the Golden Globes and broke all records for a foreign film (10 nominations for Tiger and dragon, by Ang Lee, in 2001 and Roma, by Alfonso Cuarón, in 2019). Karla Sofía Gascón becomes the first trans woman in the running for the best actress trophy. Clément Ducol and Camille strike with a nomination for the soundtrack and two compositions (The Evil et My Way), nominated for the Oscar for Best Song. Editing, image, sound, makeup, scenario complete the campaign orchestrated by Neflix with the air of a grand slam.

Near The Brutalist, which carries high the colors of auteur cinema, and Wickedthose of the Hollywood industry (10 nominations each), the French Coralie Fargeat shines in a surprising way with her conceptual gore film The Substance, which lands in the best film and best direction categories, and could propel the returning Demi Moore to the top. Fernanda Torres, the Brazilian actress I’m still here, carves out a place of choice among the favorites, and the film by Walter Salles also appears on the list of best films. Proof that voters in Los Angeles (60%) found the time, in the heart of the tragedy, to see little-anticipated films. Or that voices from abroad have, unwittingly, taken advantage of the astonishment to make themselves heard.

Emilia Perez et The Substance are on the program of the Télérama Cinema Festival. From January 22 to 28, 2025, go to one of the 450 participating arthouse theaters to (re)see a selection of the fifteen best films of the year 2024 chosen by the editorial staff of Teleramaat a price of 4 euros per place.
