Madonna’s wedding dress almost didn’t make it to her wedding to Sean Penn.

The Queen of Pop tied the knot with her now ex-husband in 1985, and her longtime costume designer, Marlene Stewart, recalled that the “hardest part” of working on the iconic dress was bring to the wedding.

She told Best magazine: “It was in a house in Malibu. The roads were inaccessible because the press was everywhere. We were planning to do a fitting and take photos. But the police arrested me! I insisted on passing. There were no cell phones, so there were pagers and I was just trying to call someone! »

Marlene finally made it through with the dress.

She adds: “Eventually, I managed to pass and Herb Ritts [le photographe de la pochette de l’album “True Blue” de Madonna, ndlr] took a photo of her getting ready in the bathroom, and I was under the dress, pulling up the garter belt! »

When it came to the wedding look, Marlene took inspiration from Madonna’s ideas for her outfit.

She remembers: ” [Madonna] said: ‘I’m going to wear a black bowler hat.’ I wanted to balance the masculine side of the dress and the classic feminine side. The idea was to be fun and provocative. I designed a classic ballerina look: silk tulle, sweetheart neckline, very simple and refined. »
