An American success which nevertheless earned them a lot of criticism on our side of the Atlantic.

In the upcoming February issue of Vanity Fair US American journalist Anna Peele spoke with dozens of people close to the couple, some of whom worked or lived with them to better understand their relationship and what has motivated them to succeed since leaving the United Kingdom. Because if “leaving the royal family was a test for the couple – legal, financial, reputational, personal and practical”, their love seems intact today, despite much speculation about their marriage.

“He is very protective of her”

After almost 10 years of relationship and despite much speculation about the state of their marriage, the former Duke and Duchess of Sussex still seem in love as day one. “They are crazy about each other,” said one person who has worked closely with the couple. “You know, when you meet these couples, you think, the way they look at each other, ‘I probably shouldn’t be here right now?’”

According to the source, Prince Harry, already very personable alone, would reveal himself even more with Meghan Markle nearby. “He is very outgoing, he is very comfortable with people, a bit like Diana… he just has this ease of putting people at ease,” said the couple’s close friend, specifying that he became “ a circus” in the presence of his wife. “He’s very protective of her because people are very mean to her… It’s a completely different experience.”

“She re-educates him”

Despite Prince Harry’s protective role towards his wife, Meghan Markle would maintain the couple’s dynamic. “Before Meghan, Harry would just go to the palace press office, ask a few questions and leave, as if he was a little bored. (…) I have the impression that she is re-educating him in a way.

A dynamic that some close people consider to be a little unhealthy. “She was frank about the fact that Harry hasn’t made many friends yet,” a source added of Meghan. “I think Harry doesn’t know what he wants because he grew up in a fishbowl, and so he doesn’t really know what real life is. (…) I don’t think he wants to be famous like Meghan wants to be.”
