French actor Vincent Lindon poses on the red carpet of the 19th Rome International Film Festival (Festa del Cinema di Roma) in Rome, October 18, 2024.
CULTURE – A few days before the film’s release Play with firescheduled for this Wednesday, January 22, Vincent Lindon spoke to the press about his significant role. In this drama, he plays Pierre, a father confronted with the violent radicalization of his son towards the extreme right, while his other child pursues brilliant studies. His performance won him the Best Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival.
Vincent Lindon welcomed this award with emotion mixed with joy and humility: “This award made me overjoyed, but it also overwhelmed me, because it’s double with Cannes, so it’s not nothing”he told AFP. In 2015, he had already won the prestigious acting prize at Cannes for his role in The law of the market by Stéphane Brizé.
“I was deeply touched by Isabelle Huppert, president of the jury, because it is so un-French to reward a compatriot”he emphasizes. But beyond his personal recognition, the actor insists on the collective aspect of this success: “I was very happy for the directors Delphine and Muriel Coulin. This reflects on everyone who worked on this project, from the actors to the directors, including the producers. It's joint work. »
This role had all the more impact on Vincent Lindon because it explores themes that are close to his heart: fatherhood, love, and the torments of a youth who loses hope and becomes radicalized. Asked about the role of culture in the face of the rise of the far right, the actor makes an uncompromising observation: “The world of culture has become terribly gentrified and tilted. »
“Before, there were 900 artists involved! »
Vincent Lindon regrets that “Intellectuals no longer communicate with each other. Everyone writes their own book, their own pamphlet…”. The actor, however, recognizes the challenges posed by the evolution of cultural benchmarks: “it’s extremely difficult for them to address a generation that evolves on social networks, with ready-made thoughts”he observes.
-Vincent Lindon also admits to regretting seeing artists less and less committed around him: “I can't stand being asked these questions anymore because others don't answer them. Before, there were 900 artists involved! Painters, musicians, whatever you want. There are no more »he whispers. However, the actor remains hopeful of a wake-up call: “At some point everyone will spread the word.”
In the meantime, he admits to having made the resolution to “give your opinion less », he confides to West France. “I’m trying experiments. The other day I was at a dinner party. I decided not to speak and to listen. It’s great to listen to others, they often speak much better than me”laughs the actor.
“The problem is that people think I'm in a bad mood and that I'm being loud. So throughout dinner, I was entitled to: “But are you okay, Vincent? Are you sure?” »he adds. A resolution that may be difficult once “Playing with fire” released in theaters, as the actor's performance has already been talked about at festivals.
