The third generation of the Mazda CX-5 will arrive on the market in 2025. With its hybrid technology and its 4.60 m long format, it will target the Toyota RAV4 more than ever.
The current second generation Mazda CX-5, known internally under the code KF, already dates from 2017. An advanced age for the family SUV (4.58 m) from the Hiroshima brand which, despite two successive restylings in 2020 then 2021, is experiencing a more complicated period. Without pretending to compete with the big names in the category due to a more discreet image and a less significant presence in Europe, its sales have become anecdotal this year, with only 300 customers won in France… But no what to leave the very important segment of family SUVs. In 2025, it is time for it to hand over to a third version which, it is official, will opt for hybridization. However, the manufacturer has not specified whether it will be a traditional full hybrid technology or a rechargeable one.
Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-50 common points
However, looking towards China, where the Mazda CX-50 – a 4.72 m long model which is also offered on the North American market – Mazda has the standard hybrid technology of the Toyota RAV4. The latter will be renewed during the year and in Europe will precisely have the new version of the Mazda CX-5 in its hands.
Unlike its big brothers Mazda CX-60, Mazda CX-70, Mazda CX-80 and Mazda CX-90 (of which only those with an even number of ten are delivered in Europe) which have opted for six-cylinder engines which transmits power to the rear wheels – i.e. 4×4 -, the new Mazda CX-5 should remain faithful to the transverse four-cylinder and front-wheel drive.image
This will allow it to offer more competitive prices to remain credible in the face of competition from Volkswagen Tiguan and other Hyundai Tucsons. That said, no 3-cylinder way Peugeot 3008 and Renault Austral. Electrification will be measured for the Mazda CX-5 because a new 100% electric SUV resulting from the Mazda Arata concept car unveiled last spring at the Beijing motor show will arrive as reinforcement by 2026. This model, designed primarily for China, will then arrive in Europe and will benefit from a range extender version. A sort of plug-in hybrid that Mazda has already tried to experiment with a version of its MX-30 without really convincing since this urban SUV with a very endearing style has not really found its audience. Before these future projects, the Mazda CX-5 hybrid will therefore support the Mazda 2 Hybrid, which is none other than a rebadged Toyota Yaris certainly benefiting from a differentiated face since its restyling.
