“After escaping a murder attempt, Franck Lazarev must find his wife Leo kidnapped by a mysterious group of armed men. He is caught up in his past and plunged into a state affair that is beyond his control.”: here is the summary ofTo Lifethe thriller by Rodolphe Lauga released on January 10 on Netflix and in which Guillaume Canet plays the leading role. The father of Marion Cotillard’s children, Louise and Marcel (7 and 13 years old), is therefore in the middle of a promotional marathon, he notably spoke to our colleagues at AlloCiné about his career.
And it’s difficult to summarize Guillaume Canet’s long career in the profession. At 51, he can boast of having been in front of and behind the camera and of having taken part in grandiose adventures. We can in particular cite Children’s games by Yann Samuell (2003)Merry Christmas by Christian Carion (2005), Don’t tell anyone which he directed (2006), Together is everything de Claude Berri (2007), The little handkerchiefs in 2010, Cezanne and me by Danièle Thompson in 2016, The big bath by Gilles Lellouche in 2018 and In the name of the earth Edouard Bergeron in 2019 among many others.
Anthony Bajon (In the name of the earth) praises Guillaume Canet
In this film, Guillaume Canet opposite other actors like Anthony Bajon. During the interview given by Guillaume Canet to AlloCiné, the 51-year-old actor watched a video in which his former partner says all the good things he thinks of the filmmaker. And according to him, no doubt, Guillaume Canet is underrated in the profession : “I don’t know if Guillaume is recognized for his true value in the profession, it’s someone who has a great reputation, who is very respected, but I think I feel like it could be upgraded. I have the impression that he is someone who does great things, who really gets involved in the roles, who knows how to make good cinema..” He explains in particular that he did not ask himself any questions to help him produce his short film: “You should know that at that time, he did not read it, he did nothing. He said to me, ‘You know what? I’m going to produce your film. He didn’t know at all what it was about and that’s Guillaume! That’s why I’m talking about a coast of love and a coast that could be even bigger because that’s basically what Guillaume is, that’s what we know less about him and me. I owe him a lot” he continued before concluding with “he’s a great man.”
These words went straight to the heart of Guillaume Canet who hastened to respond, not without emotion, to the man in whom he sees a great future in cinema: “I will first say a big thank you, tell him that it obviously touches me. I have great admiration for him, I find that he is truly the next generation of actors of his generation. There are plenty of others too, but he has quite extraordinary intelligence, playfulness and sensitivity and he’s a good guy. In the new generation, there are also some who already see themselves arriving a little too quickly when we know from experience that the road is long and that there can be small descents and he, I find that he has head firmly on your shoulders.”
“Shunned at awards ceremonies”, a fact that can’t really be explained, Guillaume Canet doesn’t care: “That’s how it is! I don’t make films for that, I make films for the characters, especially for the audience. I try to make my contribution and above all I try to entertain people and do good things. I know that he was quite disappointed and saddened that for the César, he was the only one nominated for the film (In the Name of the Earth). I had several important films and none had attracted the curiosity or support of the academy, but I was super happy for him that he was nominated as best hope. He’s a great guy.” We know on whom Guillaume Canet places his hopes for the next generation!
