You've all noticed, it's cold. And this could last in the Channel. If they will tend to rise again on Wednesday January 15, 2025 and especially Thursday January 16, 2025, the temperatures could fall again at the end of the week and thus maintain this feeling of cold, while the rain should be absent.
This cold snap is not without consequences. Particularly on air quality. Usually rather spared from episodes of pollution, the Channel is not immune to this episode.
With a good part of the department bathed in a “bad” air according to Atmo Normandie, Monday January 13, 2025, apart from the points of La Hague and Val de Saire.
Low temperatures and very weak winds
Fine particles, particularly PM2.5, are responsible for the deterioration of air quality. The maintenance of anticyclonic conditions with cold temperatures and very weak winds favor the accumulation of pollutants locally. These particles are mainly linked to human activities (industry, traffic, heating, etc.).
Conditions will deteriorate a little more on Tuesday January 14, 2025 since the air quality index will oscillate between the “bad” for the majority of the territory and the “gradient” for the tip of Cotentin.
In the other Normandy departments, the situation is even marked by pollution peaks. A prefectural information and recommendation procedure was thus triggered, for this Tuesday, in the department of Eure as well as a prefectural alert procedure on persistence in the departments of Seine-Maritime and Calvados.
