Under the mist of Cadiz, this January 10, the future officers stand in line. Among them, a familiar face stands out: that of Princess Leonor. Accompanied by her comrades, she listens attentively to the words of the mayor, Bruno Garcia, who wishes them “good winds and good seas”. This group, the 97e promotion of the training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, is preparing to set sail on January 11, for a five-month journey in the cold waters of the Atlantic.
But before leaving, there are rituals not to be missed. After encouragement from the mayor of Cadiz, the future sovereign signed the book of honor. Once these formalities are completed, the group leaves the town hall to the applause of passers-by, an attention to which the young princess responds… with a smile!
Farewells and blessings
The students board a bus bound for nearby San Fernando, where they lay flowers at the Hall of Fame, located at the Naval Noncommissioned Officers School. During this ceremony, the young sailors also pour ocean water collected last year by the previous promotion into the cenotaph, a tradition scrupulously respected the day before boarding the “Elcano”. Then, they visit the church of the Virgin of Carmen, patroness of the Navy. At the end of this celebration, each student receives a scapular intended to protect them during their journey.
The last engagements of future Navy officers before their departure end here. They can now take advantage of their last evening on dry land to say goodbye. Even if it is certain that many parents will be present tomorrow, ready to shed a few tears out of emotion. The Princess of Asturias, for her part, is certain that King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will be there since they will preside over the ceremony.
