Today is the big launch of the new initiative for responsible multinationals. Supported by Unia, the initiative demands the obvious: multinationals must be held accountable for their actions when they violate human rights or destroy entire regions.
Switzerland is lagging behind
All around Switzerland, countries are forcing multinationals to respect human rights and environmental standards in their business activities and to reduce their climate-damaging emissions. However, although our country is home to many multinationals and plays a determining role in the global trade of raw materials, the discussion on the responsibility of multinationals is not moving forward.
This goes against popular will: in 2020, the majority of the population supported the initiative in favor of the responsibility of multinationals. The initiative was only missing from the majority of cantons to be accepted.
Towards a record harvest
The coalition in which Unia participates therefore wants to increase the pressure on politicians with an ambitious objective: we want to collect the 100,000 signatures necessary for the new initiative for responsible multinationals in just 30 days. Saturday January 11, 2025, around 500 signature collection stands will be held throughout Switzerland.
