Paul Watson is free. Denmark decided on Tuesday, December 17, not to extradite the environmental activist to Japan. He was in Nuuk prison in Greenland, where he had been in pre-trial detention for almost five months. “Great news”, according to singer Florent Pagny.
The artist spoke to RTL after the announcement of the release of Paul Watson. “The artists have moved a little, pa lot of people went to demonstrate and express their disagreement with this situation“, recalls the singer, who notably recorded a song to demand the release from prison of the founder of the NGO Sea Shepherd.
Japanese authorities accuse Paul Watson of being co-responsible for damage and injuries aboard a Japanese whaling ship in 2010 as part of a campaign led by his organization. For Florent Pagny, “an injustice” was taking place. “There is an international rule that prohibits whaling and Japan decides that it is not concerned,” denounces the singer.
Paul Watson “went to fight this problem. And 14 years later, he gets stuck in prison when he just wants to give a helping hand to the planet, to nature, to these whales“, continues the interpreter of Know how to love at the microphone of RTL. “Let’s be happy”, “thank you everyone”, welcomes the singer, highlighting the interventions of the Macron couple and Michel Barnier in this matter.
