Actor and director Sean Penn received an award in tribute to his career during the Marrakech International Film Festival.
CINEMA – The gap is widening a little further between the Oscars and Sean Penn. Winner of two best actor statuettes for Mystic River (2004) et Harvey Milk (2009), the American castigated the Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences, organizer of the ceremony on the sidelines of the Marrakech Film Festival.
After receiving an award in tribute to his entire career, Sean Penn criticizes an Academy of Oscars with a vision that is too narrow and uniform. According to him, it proves “of truly extraordinary cowardice when it comes to being part of the great world of expression” as reported by the magazine Variety.
He also considers that she has “largely contributed to limiting imagination and considerably limiting different cultural expressions” and that award ceremonies were especially “TV shows”.
If he is not “very excited about what we call “the Oscars””the director still considers that The Florida Project, I’m Still Here or even Emilia Perez deserve to be rewarded this year.
Support for Donald Trump biopic
The Apprentice by Ali Abbasi also finds favor in the eyes of the actor, who deplores the lack of support from the profession. “ It's amazing to see how much this “non-conformist” community is afraid of a big film like this. A film with great actors. [C’est incroyable] that they too can be as afraid as a tiny Republican deputy”he says about the film.
The biopic on Donald Trump's youth paints an unflattering portrait of the character. Sebastian Stan, who plays the Republican, recently said no actor wanted to do the famous show Actors on Actors the Variety with him because of the subject of the film. He could therefore be one of the major absentees from the ceremony on March 11.
This isn't the first time Sean Penn has attacked the Oscars. In 2023, the director castigated the Academy for not having invited Volodymyr Zelensky, the awards ceremony taking place a month after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He then went to kyiv to present one of his statuettes to the Ukrainian president.
“It’s a symbolic gesture between two friends, inspired by my shame at the Academy of Oscars, which preferred to show Will Smith slapping Chris Rock rather than inviting the greatest living symbol of cinema and humanity,” he wanted to clarify at the time.
In 2023, the actor also directed Superpowera documentary that tries to understand the armed conflict while retracing the atypical life of Volodymyr Zelensky.
