What will become of the Macérien wasteland, already partly reclaimed and used each year during the Cabaret Vert festival in Charleville-Mézières? Part of the former automobile factory, classified in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments, has been unoccupied for 40 years. An association will install a center of cultural, economic, commercial and tourist activities there.

The architectural project, selected following the call for tenders, was presented this Thursday, November 28, 2024. It was the architectural agency 9.81 which imagined its outlines.

The buildings, marked by its rich industrial past and the closures of production sites which have increased in recent decades, date from 1874 and will be given a second lease of life. Inside, bicycles, shells and cars were made.

Since 2017, the decontamination and security work has been carried out for 3 and a half million euros. They made it possible to install water and electricity connections and add a sanitation network. The Trapèze association will then be responsible for investing in the site.

The ambition of the Charleville-Mézières agglomeration, the Cabaret Vert team and the Friends of Macérien association, is to create in the center of this wasteland a tourist, economic and cultural center of attraction. All in “rebuilding the city on the city”that is to say, without consuming the slightest virgin or agricultural plot.

In total, the rehabilitation budget will be 22 million euros. 80% of this sum will be financed by Europe, the State, the Region and the department. The work will begin in a year, in December 2025. But from September 2025, part of the Eiffel Hall will already host carpentry training for the decoration of shows.

There you can find accommodation, catering, a mini-brewery and even a cycling area. The large workshop, the centerpiece of the whole, will house a music school, a second-hand store, shared offices, and a restaurant on the roof. Delivery is planned for 2028, or even 2029.
