Actresses Judi Dench and Sian Phillips become the first women to join London’s famous boys’ club Garrick

It is the last “boys club” in London. This Monday, July 1, two actresses have just been named “eminent members” of the institution, which includes King Charles III and Brian Cox.

It is one of the most legendary clubs in London, and one of the oldest. Known for being reserved only for men, the Garrick Club has just taken a turn. This Monday, July 1st, the Guardian reported that two women had been appointed, for the first time, as “distinguished members” of the institution. They are actresses Judi Dench (Hamlet, James Bond) and Siân Phillips (Becket, Dune). Aged 89 and 91 respectively, they were granted accelerated membership at the annual members’ meeting.

Because the Garrick Club had been increasingly criticized for its lack of diversity for several years. The institution founded in 1831, located in the Covent Garden district of central London, was regularly denounced for its archaism and its male-dominated atmosphere in places of power and influence. Its members include many judges and lawyers, journalists, senior civil servants and politicians.

Brian Cox et Benedict Cumberbatch

According to a list revealed in March, still by The GuardianKing Charles III and actors Brian Cox (Succession) and Benedict Cumberbatch would also be part of it. A publication that had then increased the pressure on the club to admit women. In 2021, a petition had received the support of Cherie Blair, renowned lawyer and wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair, to review the rule of the establishment. The latter had notably recounted how, in 1976, she was refused entry, remaining outside while her future husband had been allowed to enter.

In a vote held last May, members finally voted in favor of opening up to women. Judi Dench, who first shone on stage and became known worldwide for her role as “M” in James Bond, is the most successful English actress with two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, ten Baftas and multiple theatre awards. Siân Phillips, a Welsh actress, is best known for her theatre roles and for her appearance in the film Dune by David Lynch in 1984.

Following these appointments, the Garrick Club is expected to soon induct other women into its ranks, including former Home Secretary Amber Rudd and Channel 4 journalist Cathy Newman. However, the process could take between two and five years.
