Women, as we know, are under a lot of pressure when it comes to their physical appearance. These actresses or singers have chosen to show themselves naturally and we admit that it does us good to discover faces without makeup and without artifice. They all advocate the same thing: the freedom to choose their appearance.

Alicia Keys

She is one of the stars who began to show us that she didn’t need anything to be beautiful. Behind this change, the singer wanted to denounce the dictates of fashion and show that it is completely normal to have dark circles, an imperfect complexion and small imperfections. This is how she launched the “no make-up” movement in 2016 and even presented the Grammy Awards a few years later, daring to show herself au naturel.

Last June, she spoke about this period of rebellion in the magazine “In Style”. Behind this choice? A deep desire to feel free, with or without makeup! “I want a woman to have the right to choose,” she confided at the time.

More recently, it was the former naiad of “Baywatch” who gave up makeup, daring to show herself at the most glamorous events without foundation and other mascara or eyeliner. The one who had always been valued through her physique, the one who was America’s number one fantasy with her generous chest, her blonde hair and her makeup has decided to turn things around.

At the Met Gala last May, the star opted for an ultra-natural beauty look and showed up on the red carpet with a smile on her face and her lipstick in the closet. Her state of mind is changing. She explains this by admitting that she now accepts herself as she is.

One of Instagram’s most followed personalities is also adhering to this trend. The singer is especially keen to show her younger fans that retouched photos are just smoke and mirrors. The young woman who was the victim of body-shaming doesn’t lose her bearings and does the best she can to accept herself as she is, a message that her millions of fans seem to appreciate.

However, it is obviously not easy every day. The star who has been suffering from lupus since 2013 has had to deal with weight gain, certain medications logically having an impact on her body, and has admitted to sometimes having trouble dealing with people’s meanness and negative criticism about her appearance.

Kate Winslet

At 48, the British actress is a role model not only because of her immense talent but also for her strong positions regarding the judgment of women. In 2021, she starred in the series “Mare of Easttown” revealing herself without makeup, sometimes with greasy hair and dressed like an average forty-something. And it is often her unkempt appearance that has been the source of comments. She hopes that her realistic performance will bring about a real change in the way we perceive women in their forties.

She also fights against the retouching of her photos and in 2022 participated in a campaign for the giant “L’Oréal”, an advertisement in which… she removed her makeup.

Editor for various Swiss newspapers, blogger and passionate about words, Elvire Küenzi loves series (she fell into the magic cauldron while watching Sex and the City and never came out)! She also writes girly novels while eating marshmallows and sipping cocktails (in moderation, of course).
