After Sweden and Norway, Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark continue their tour of Scandinavia and the Far North, with a visit to Greenland. A must… and two guests we weren’t expecting: their twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
Greenland is not only the largest island in the world… It is also a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark and a territory dear to the heart of King Frederik, from which he set off in 2000 on a journey of nearly 3,000 kilometers on skis and sled dogs…. Expedition name: Sirius. Twenty-four years later, the man who is today king found the inhabitants of the town of Qaanaaq… and his old sleigh! One of the highlights of this eight-day tour, from June 29 to July 7, which will take the sovereign – accompanied by his wife Queen Mary – to the four corners of the country.
But on the second day of the visit, the Greenlanders were surprised to see two more guests: Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, the royal couple’s twins, who were only too happy to take a few days off from Copenhagen. The teenagers – now 13 – set off with their parents on a very special mission, at sea, off the coast of the town of Qeqertarsuaq. The goal: to install a microphone to record whale songs all year round, 24 hours a day. This sound station will allow researchers to track the movements of the mammals in the region.
Once back on land, the royal family visited the town and met with citizens over coffee on the town’s football pitch. Frederik, Mary, Vincent and Josephine had a chance to kick a ball around, with varying degrees of success.
In the afternoon, the King gave the start of a new race, open to all, like his Royal Run, organized every year in Denmark. After the north, the visit will continue to the west, around the town of Aasiaat, then to the south, to Nuuk, still aboard the royal yacht Dannebrog. Will Vincent and Josephine still be on the trip? The twins are definitely asking for more…
