Sport after 40: these activities that are gentle on the joints are ideal for staying in shape

As we age, cartilage wears away and bone density decreases, increasing the risk of injury. This is why it is recommended to favor gentle activities that minimize the impact on the joints while offering cardiovascular and muscular benefits. Brisk walking, for example, is an excellent option: it improves endurance, tones muscles and strengthens the cardiovascular system without putting too much pressure on the knees and hips. Cycling is also great for the quads and calves while being easy on the joints, as it eliminates the impact of repeated movements on the ground. Additionally, practice exercises like yoga or Pilates helps improve flexibility, balance and muscle strengthening, whilst being gentle on the body.

Other water activities, such as swimming or aquagymare particularly beneficial for people over 40 years old. Water reduces body weight, which reduces pressure on joints while providing natural resistance to strengthen muscles. Swimming works all muscle groups, improves flexibility and is great for the heart. Aquagym, for its part, combines the benefits of aerobics with a low impact on the skeleton. Finally, regular stretching, as well as moderate muscle strengthening sessions with rubber bands, help maintain joint mobility and prevent chronic pain. By integrating these gentle sports into a regular routine, it is possible to stay in shape, while protecting your body from the effects of aging.
