In the 90s, Julia Roberts starred in this romantic comedy with this actor she hates. From the moment they met for the first time, it was war! A bad atmosphere between the two stars of the film which was felt in the final product

It was in 1994 that Julia Roberts’ career exploded with Pretty Woman. Cult romantic comedy par excellence, Garry Marshall’s film in which the 23-year-old actress then shared the bill with Richard Gere was a monumental hit at the box office. For a budget of 14 million dollars, the feature film grossed 463 million. Enough to propel the career of Julia Roberts who was not satisfied with just this cinematic genre in her career. For example, in 1993, we could see her in the thriller The Pelican Affair. Moreover, it was during the promotion of the latter that she complained about one of the actors she hated the most in her career…

A deleterious atmosphere on the set

Four years after Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts returns to the romantic comedy genre with Les Complices. The feature film begins with a tragic train incident in which the culprit has been found. However, young journalist Sabrina Peterson (Julia Roberts) and former journalist Peter Brackett (Nick Nolte) suspect that this is just a scapegoat. Reluctantly, the two journalists will team up to find proof of the identity of the real culprit. As this hunt begins which puts their lives in danger, they will discover another side of each other.

While Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte were supposed to play two romantic characters on screen, in reality the two actors couldn’t see each other. During the promotion of The Pelican Affair, Julia Roberts declared that she had found Nick Nolte “absolutely disgusting“. A little later, she added that he had annoyed her from their first meeting, and that she suspected that he intended to scare people away. According to information from the Los Angeles Times, this ended up creating a vicious circle on the setwith Nick Nolte’s behavior doing everything to annoy Julia Roberts, also annoying her in turn.

A reconciliation years later

Because of this lack of chemistry between the two actors, it ended up showing on screen. The film paid the price since for a budget of 45 million dollars, it only brought in 61 million. Whether on the side of critics or the public, the impressions are not good either since it is only 22% recommended by critics and 33% by spectators. Years later, in 2022, Nick Holte finally admitted his faults and declared that everything was much better with Julia Roberts. ”’What we experienced was absurd (…) It was partly my fault, and a little bit his too,” said Nolte, who acknowledged that he had ”wrongly approached things”’ he admitted to Insider. So the hatchet is buried!
