On October 5, Geezer Butler received an award honoring his “selfless devotion” to animal protection. Alongside director and actress Alison Eastwood, philanthropist Laurie McGrath and scientist/philanthropist Gary Michelson, Butler has been celebrated for her role in championing animal rights. The event took place in California, and Butler shared his surprise on social media, explaining that his wife Gloria had kept the honor a secret.

In an Instagram post, Butler said: “I don’t know what was more shocking: receiving an award that Gloria kept for me as a surprise or that Tal Ronnen left Crossroads Kitchen to give it to me. Thanks, Tal. Thank you to the Global Council For Animals and the Center For Humane Economy.”

Wayne Pacelle, president of the Center For A Humane Economy, highlighted the impact of the winners’ commitment to animal protection: “It is no exaggeration to say that millions of animals will be spared from cruelty thanks to their selfless dedication.”

A long-standing commitment to animal rights

Geezer Butler has always been a strong advocate for animal rights. In 2023, he spoke about his journey to veganism, explaining that he stopped eating meat at the age of eight. He remembers: “I never liked eating meat, but my mother always served it to me. One day I cut a piece and blood came out. I asked my mother what it was and she said, ‘It’s meat, it comes from a cow.’ From that day on, I never ate meat again.”

In 2009, Butler collaborated with Peta2 for a pro-vegetarian ad. In this video he says: “Nowadays you can find everything vegan, even marshmallows. You don’t need to eat meat anymore.” He adds that many guests at his table don’t even realize they’re eating meat alternatives until they’re mid-meal, surprised by the taste.
