In September 2023, the actor was the victim of a serious accident during a driving course in Essonne. Since then, he has been recovering little by little and also talks about reconciliation with Vincent Cassel, a long-time friend with whom he had been estranged for years.
On September 3, 2023, Mathieu Kassovitz was participating in a motorcycle driving course on a circuit when he lost control of his vehicle after “cutting a chicane”. Propelled off the circuit, he suffered serious injuries to his femur and ankle. His condition was initially considered serious, but after an operation and rehabilitation, the actor gave reassuring news : “I’m better. I’m in rehabilitation and I’m coming out of an operation (…) I did something stupid and life goes on. You have to take risks, it’s the only way to feel alive.” Questioned by Guillaume Pley, Mathieu Kassovitz returned 1 year later to this accident which could have cost him his life.
