Didier Drogba, the former Ivorian international, explained in an interview with Tribune Libre the realities behind a football career.
According to the former Chelsea striker, contrary to popular belief, being a footballer does not automatically mean being rich.
The Ivorian star indicates that only a limited number of players in the world manage to play at a very high level and receive colossal salaries.
Furthermore, even players who receive very high salaries often find themselves unhappy when they do not play for their team.
This is because they are above all competitors and have the ambition to prove to the world that they are the best in their field.
“There is a lot of money (in football), but there is a lot of money when you succeed, when you get to the top.
But you should know that there are very few players, what we call the elite, who have these stratospheric salaries. The others are much more difficult. There is a sort of middle class and then there are several levels.
We should not believe that all players, all people who play football are millionaires or billionaires.
Money is part of this job, but I am well placed to tell you that it is not what makes you happiest.
As an athlete, as a competitor, what matters to us is competition. You may have the best salary in the history of football, but if you don’t play, you’re unhappy.
So it’s not money that makes us run, it’s passion, it’s the desire to succeed, to prove that we are the best, to show that we are capable of achieving something of big “said the former Chelsea striker.
