While Périgourdin Kendji Girac is still hospitalized at the Haut-Levêque hospital in in , the Mont-de-Marsan prosecutor explained that the singer admitted during his hearing to having shot himself voluntarily to “faking suicide”, in a context of tension with his partner, who threatened to leave him. The prosecutor rejected the theory of an accident, initially supported by the singer after his bullet wound, but judged “impossible” after ballistic expertise of the weapon used, all the safety features of which are “operational”.

The essential

  • The singer had 2.5 g/l of alcohol in his blood at the time of his injury
  • In situ expertise in the caravan excludes shooting carried out by a third party
  • Kendji Girac said he wanted to scare his wife by simulating suicide
  • The legal proceedings could “come to an end very soon”

“I wanted to fake a suicide”

“I did that because I was scared, I was all alone. My family wasn’t there” said Kendji Girac, during his hearing on , according to the Mont-de-Marsan prosecutor. On the day of the incident, his wife had just threatened to leave him because he had come home drunk and woke up their 3-year-old daughter. The singer indicated that he wanted to scare his partner by simulating suicide. “I was drunk to the point of not knowing what to do. I lost control,” he also said during his hearing, the prosecutor reported. “Suicide is a real taboo in the Traveler community,” explained Olivier Janson.

A budding alcohol problem

According to the prosecutor, Kendji’s alcohol level when he was picked up at 5 a.m. was 2.5 g/l of blood. He no longer had cocaine in his blood, but the presence of cocaine metabolites proves that he had previously used cocaine.

Olvier Janson also reported a “Incipient addiction to alcohol” of the singer, reported by his partner, a subject which generated numerous tensions in the couple. Soraya Miranda describes Kendji Girac as the object of increasingly long beatings lasting up to 48 hours, where he was “anything”. But she does not mention violence against her or their daughter.

An argument with his partner

This Thursday, the prosecutor detailed the facts, as they were told by Soraya Miranda, Kendji Girac’s partner, during her hearing. She, who had gone to bed at 11 p.m. with their 3-year-old daughter, was woken up by her companion, who had returned drunk from a day spent drinking, and from a drunken evening spent playing, among other things, black jack. She asks him to continue making noise elsewhere. “He sits in his car, a few meters from the caravan” and puts on some music. “It seems to be hymns. She sends him a few text messages. He then leaves in the car,” says the prosecutor. She then makes a phone call to Kendji’s father, saying that she is worried to see him leave with his vehicle. The latter immediately calls his son, who reassures him that he has not left the camp, that he is at the entrance and that he is going to go to bed.

The prosecutor recalls that the singer was supposed to go to the next day for professional obligations, and that he had to take a plane at 7 a.m. Returning to the caravan, undressed and in his boxers, he repeats several times to his daughter that he loves her, and wakes her up in doing so. Soraya Miranda then explained to the prosecutor that she had told her companion that she had decided to “leave”, provoking his anger, which he expressed by punching a wall.

She goes to bed, leaving the door ajar. She explains that in the meantime, he has put on his clothes, that she hears him opening and closing cupboards and hears a gunshot, then smells “a smell of iron”. She then goes to seek help in a surrounding caravan.

An impossible accident

“An accident, an inadvertent shooting which is generally extremely unlikely when it comes to a handgun of this nature, is considered impossible in the present case”declared the magistrate at a press conference. “All the safety features are operational. (…) A shot cannot go off on its own”he argued.

The presence of a third party was also ruled out by the analyzes carried out in the caravan, according to the prosecutor: “The presence of a third party is physically impossible between Kendji Girac and the wall of the caravan. There is no room,” he asserted.

Legal proceedings soon to be closed

A investigation was opened on Monday for “attempted voluntary homicide” by the prosecution, a few hours after he was found seriously injured in the chest on a Travelers area in Biscarrosse, in the Landes. Since then, witnesses and relatives of the singer have been interviewed. He was heard by the police this Wednesday afternoon for about three hours.
