Amazon is leaving Quebec and will close seven establishments across the province, including warehouses located in Laval. This decision means the layoff of nearly 1,800 employees.
The information was first announced by - and La Presse on the morning of January 22.
Among the positions affected by this decision are managers, as well as employees of delivery centers and sorting centers. Small businesses which ensured delivery to customers’ homes, and which could use a truck in Amazon colors, are also affected by this announcement.
- specifies that the company Intelcom, already a subcontractor to Amazon for delivery and sorting, could take over the place left vacant.
Amazon reportedly reacted by mentioning that “this decision was not taken lightly” and that the employees concerned could receive up to 14 weeks of salary after the closure of the facilities.
Later in the day, the CSN reacted to this announcement, deploring that “the closures announced today are part of an anti-union campaign waged against the CSN and against Amazon employees.”
Convention collective
Remember that employees of the DXT4 distribution center in Laval voted in favor of unionization in May 2024, becoming the web giant’s first unionized warehouse in the country. Although refuted by Amazon, this could have weighed in the decision to leave Quebec.
-Negotiations had also been at a standstill for several weeks between the employer and the union side, which was demanding a starting salary of $26 per hour. (N.P.)
