Presenting your ticket with proof of identity on trains is almost over. Since yesterday, Monday January 20, SNCF Voyageurs has deployed a whole new control devicesimpler and faster. The technology will be tested for several weeks on board the TGV Inoui, before being generalized to the rest of the fleet within a few weeks.
The SNCF changes its mind
After a fledgling first phase, the France Idété application had been largely ignored by the SNCF group. Less than a year ago, the group's general conditions still required the presentation of the physical identity card, despite legal provisions allowing proof of identity by digital means. Otherwise, travelers who only had their identity card in digital format were considered fraudsters, and therefore risked a fine. Some had also found themselves in a situation of violation, without the possibility of appeal.
It is a transition to digital that is accelerating in the country. For future travelers, it will first be necessary to have downloaded the France Identity application on their smartphone, and activated their digital identity card via their physical document. Once on board the train, all you have to do is open the application to present your QR Code to the controller. The latter will then be able, with a simple gesture, to verify your identity as well as the validity of the ticket. This code, readable by all crew chiefs, promises to facilitate checks, while avoiding the risk of fraud on board the wagons.
What information will be accessible?
The QR Codes present on the France Identity application are encrypted: the controller will only have access to your first name, last name and date of birth. Information that already appears on your ticket when you purchase a transport ticket. “This is the only information shared with SNCF Voyageurs, and necessary for the conductor to find the corresponding train ticket with the identity of the traveler.“, indicates the company.
-The decision sounds like a further step before the general dematerialization of identity documents on a European scale. At a time when France Identity has just corrected one of its biggest flaws, the government is preparing to facilitate access to new generation biometric cards. A new reason for early replacement of old cards will avoid waiting for the current card to expire.
