In March 2020, just before the entire planet was put on pause with the pandemic, Matthew Cyr announced on social networks that he had separated from his partner of 12 years and mother of his two children. He said then that this difficult breakup was “total shaking”. The situation would get much worse later.

At the microphone of Take a breakin an episode posted online a few days ago, the comedian recounted having been in court for four years in a divorce which cost him “over $250,000”. On top of this financial burden, he learned in May 2023 that he was losing custody of his children. Instead of seeing them every other week, he was now only allowed four days a month.

Atypical schedule

“The judge, my face did not return to her,” he says. Despite the fact that all the odds were in my favor, because we all agree that I am not an alcoholic, I am not a drug addict, I am not a gamblerI am not violent. There is absolutely nothing against me that could be brought to court to the point of losing custody of your children.”

Mathieu Cyr mentions that the official reason for the loss of custody of his children that he was given is that he has an “atypical schedule”. Because he often had to go abroad for the filming of his show Skate the worldbroadcast on TV5, he thus missed days of duty which were noted in his file.

“I had asked to have care for one week at my house and one week at my mother’s house. But I was refused. We had 5-2-2-5 guard. That [ensuite] was taken to court saying I was an absentee father.”

Major depression

The comedian adds that he was diagnosed with major depression during the difficult divorce proceedings. And when he shared his condition with the opposing party, hoping to stop the “hostilities,” it turned against him. “They made a link between it and bipolarity to get me into it even more.”

He admits to having had dark thoughts in recent years and found it difficult to write comedic material during difficult times. “It’s hard to be on stage. I have to write a new show. I have to [publie sur les réseaux sociaux]. Man, you’re losing your kids. Do you care about your Facebook status? You’re just trying to save your life.”
