On the night of Saturday January 18 to Sunday January 19, 2025, a magnitude 2.4 earthquake was recorded at 12:32 a.m., at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers. The epicenter was located in Saint-Saturnin-du-Bois, a commune in Charente-Maritime located 31 kilometers east of La Rochelle, according to data from Volcano Discovery.
Characteristics of the earthquake
The tremor was located at coordinates 46.2093°N and 0.7593°W. Twelve people near the epicenter reported feeling mild vibrations.
The technical details provided by the specialized site indicate a released seismic energy estimated at 2.5 x 10⁸ joules, or approximately 69.8 kWh. With an intensity of level III on the Mercalli scale, the earthquake caused weak tremors, without causing material damage.
