Dobes in the footsteps of Dryden

We agree that four matches do not make a career. But Jakub Dobes has been frankly impressive since his debut with the Canadian. His four victories came against big clubs abroad, namely in Florida, Colorado, Washington and Dallas. His save rate of 0.963 and his average of 0.98 goals allowed are science fiction!

It’s one thing to have an imposing stature like his, at 6’4″ and 215 lbs, but you also need to have good technique. As they say in hockey language, Dobes is square in front of his net. The puck hits him, a sign that he is still in the right place.

Carey Price was like that.

Dryden contre Dryden

Out of curiosity, I consulted the statistics of some former Habs goalkeepers when they started in the National League. In 1971, Ken Dryden played 33 games with the Montreal Voyageurs, the Canadiens’ then farm team in the American League, before being recalled by the big club in March. He won his six games that month, five as a starter and one in relief of Rogatien Vachon, who had nevertheless allowed no goals on 12 shots in a game against the Buffalo Sabres.

The explanation was that Canadian coach Al MacNeil, who passed away last week, called on Dryden to allow him to face his brother Dave, who was his Sabers opposite number “Punch” Imlach had just been sent into the fray to replace Joe Daley, one of the last NHL goalies to play without a mask.

Dryden maintained a .957 save percentage and 1.65 goals-against average before helping the Habs win an unexpected Stanley Cup playoff run.

In his three starts in front of the Canadiens’ net, during the 1952-1953 season, Jacques Plante received the credit for two victories and a draw. His goals allowed average was 1.65. Note that the save rate was not compiled that season. It started during the 1955-1956 campaign.

The beginnings of Patrick Roy were more difficult, he who had been called upon to make a first outing in relief in 1984-1985. In his rookie season in 1985-86, he allowed 19 goals in his first four starts, including seven in a game against the Bruins and six against the Hartford Whalers.

As for Carey Price, his record was 2-1-1, a streak during which he allowed 11 goals,
