“I am announcing today that I will create a foreign finance department to collect our customs duties and all revenues from abroad,” Donald Trump said on his Truth social network.
He wrote “external” in capital letters to emphasize the parallel he draws with the internal revenue service (IRS, the American tax authorities). A way for him to ensure that, under his presidency, the fiscal pressure will fall more on the rest of the world than on “our great people”.
“We’re going to start charging those who are making money off of us through trade, and they’re going to start paying, finally, their fair share,” he added.
He added that the birth date of this administration would be January 20, the day of his inauguration.
During the campaign, Donald Trump promised massive tax cuts and raised customs barriers, including with neighbors Canada and Mexico.
He thus expressed his desire to implement 10 to 20% customs duties on all products entering the United States, and even up to 60% or even 100% on those coming from China.
