In the same show, one of the directors, Adil El Arbi, invited to talk about his new film “Patsers”, reacted to this story. “Every time we play in Brussels – and we almost always play in Molenbeek, Anderlecht or in the Marolles – there is always someone who comes to tell us: ‘Hey, you have to pay’. We never do that. We just make sure to talk to people in the neighborhood, because we also have a lot of connections in those neighborhoods, we have family there. And we’re just making sure that more security guards stay near the trucks at night. We have filmed three films and a series there and each time they come to try. In the end, there was never a problem. We make a few phone calls and of course more security is provided. Part of the budget then simply goes to security.“
“Antwerp is cooler”
He also explains that he shot his new film in Antwerp, where they “never had any problems“. “We filmed in South Central Los Angeles, where there were 350 murders during our filming period. It’s a little worse than in Brussels, but it’s a reality in certain streets of Brussels that we need a little more security. Does this bother me? It’s just reality. Budget-wise, we’d rather spend that money on cool plans or more fun things, but we still want to play in those neighborhoods. It’s more authentic, these are also the neighborhoods we know best and we will continue to do so, but Antwerp is cooler.“
