The water main break cost Télé-Québec $4 million

Télé-Québec had to pay more than $4 million to carry out emergency work after a major break in a water pipe near its head office on August 16.

The same day, the devastating effect of the major water leak was already in no doubt. The break in an 84-inch water main installed in 1985 caused a gigantic geyser at the corner of René-Lévesque Boulevard and de Lorimier Street.

Télé-Québec was then evacuated, and the water had to be pumped, decontaminated and cleaned urgently in the public broadcaster’s building. Demolition work was even necessary.

For the entire work, the bill amounts to $3.99 million according to a notice published in the government’s call for tenders system last December, 4 months after the water main break.

It was the Geyser group, a construction company from , which obtained the contract by mutual agreement.

In addition to the cost of the work, Télé-Québec also had to incur bills of $288,842 for occupational health, safety and hygiene consulting services to restore the facilities, $25,000 for architectural fees, $29,000 for structural engineering fees and $30,000 for mechanical and electrical fees.

Télé-Québec will therefore have had to spend a little more than 3.5% of its annual budget of $120 million to respond to this major disaster.

Remember that the break in the water main also flooded around twenty businesses, and caused water infiltration into the basements and cellars of around fifty homes.
