Today, many stores will remain closed in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin

So that the consumers can make their Christmas presents. So that they can take advantage of good opportunities during the sales. The municipality of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (Manche) authorizes businesses from the city to open the doors of their boutiques five Sundays each year.

A cost not necessarily profitable

In 2025, the first permitted Sunday is today, Sunday January 12. However, yesterday, in the streets of the city, posters announced winter sales discounts on store windows but no exceptional opening!

We discussed it this afternoon with fellow traders and did a quick survey, I believe that many stores will not open.

Opening a store involves costs which would not necessarily be profitable given the crowds in shops on Sundays, explain many Cherbourg traders.

“We opened several Sundays at the end of the year, and the result was not necessarily very convincing even though it was the Christmas period, a real period of rebound for commerce. This Sunday, we will therefore remain closed,” explains another ready-to-wear brand.

“If I’m the only one to open, it’s definitely not worth it”

At 5:30 p.m. yesterday, some were still hesitant to open their doors the next day. “I’m going to try to do a survey in my street. If I’m the only one to open, it’s definitely not worth it. But I find that a bit of a shame. You have to create the desire,” smiles Sophie Lemasson, manager of the Le Vestoire store. The choice is always difficult for a business.

The commercial galleries have decided. Les Éléis, in the heart of Cherbourg, or Cotentin La Galerie, will also remain closed. The supermarkets will be open in the morning, like every Sunday, but nothing more.

Years ago, we opened. But not this year. The sales started rather calmly, as one would expect. So we will be open like every Sunday morning, but we will close in the afternoon, our employees need to be able to rest!

If a few stores open today, it seems quite anecdotal. On the other hand, all the merchants are waiting for you from Tuesday, always with good deals on their shelves.
