Interview – Mahend Gungapersad, Minister of Education and Human Resources: “Unacceptable that a child leaves primary school without knowing how to read, write and count”

After university studies in English language and literature, he taught at MGI while pursuing studies in pedagogy and educational management which led him to a doctorate. He was the first principal of Rabindranath Tagore Secondary School from 2003 to 2014 and a lecturer at MIE and Middlesex University. On the eve of his first school year, this passionate teacher shared with “l’express” what he wants to accomplish so that no Mauritian child is considered a failure and left behind.

Île-aux-Bénitiers: Between tourism development and environmental protection

The problems on Île-aux-Bénitiers are not new. Former member of Savane-Rivière-Noire Ezra Jhuboo asked a question in Parliament in 2018 to find out if the government at the time had a master plan to regulate tourist activities on this island and to properly develop existing infrastructure. “There are no toilet facilities, waste is not collected,” said the former MP.

Caudan flyover: Sandeo Seeburn, 71, run over by a driver under the influence

On January 11 at 6:10 a.m., a tragic accident struck again and this time on the flyover, in Caudan, Port-Louis, adding a new tragedy to a dark series which continues to grow heavier. A 71-year-old motorcyclist, Sandeo Seeburn, resident of Terre-Rouge, lost his life after a violent collision with a private vehicle. The latter was driven by a 32-year-old man, living in Rose-Hill. Following the impact, the victim was thrown from the flyover and fell directly onto the road, where he immediately succumbed to his injuries.
