A study by Deloitte and revealed by the Green Car Reports website sheds new light on “the barrier to EV adoption” that is charging time. The text signed by Stephen Edelstein of Green Car Reports lists the various findings related to American consumers. Traditionally, this is a clientele that is not very keen on the idea of EVs.
This international survey — 31,000 respondents from 30 different countries were surveyed — reveals that almost eight in ten people in the United States planned to buy an EV because they could charge it at home. “This is a figure close to what various studies have highlighted for years, although 58% of the overall survey sample said they currently do not have access to a charger, which requires more detail,” writes Mr. Edelstein.
For years, the various stakeholders in EV matters in Quebec, such as the Association of Electric Vehicles of Quebec or the public charging network Circuit Électrique, have repeated that nearly 90% of charging needs are met at home.
The survey adds that “35% of U.S. consumers surveyed said they travel more than 60 miles [100 kilomètres] from their home only once or twice a month. She adds another 23% of respondents who admitted that they never go that far.
And since we are talking about charging time at a fast station, it seems that this aspect would not affect American consumers.
“Among [ceux qui ont été] surveyed, 77% said they were willing to wait up to 40 minutes to charge their car from zero to 80%, which is well within the DC fast-charging envelope of most current electric vehicles », Underlines the author of the article.
Different portrait
This recent Deloitte study contrasts with those published in the past. About a year ago, a survey revealed that electric vehicle charging times and costs could hold back buyers.
Another Deloitte study, carried out two years earlier, revealed that two-thirds of Americans did not want an EV, mainly for reasons of range and cost.
“If the conclusions of this [nouvelle] study is accurate, electric vehicles are expected to exceed consumer expectations. The list of vehicles with particularly short charging times on the road is growing,” concludes Mr. Edelstein.
He ends by pointing out that several companies are promising that charging times of 10 minutes at fast terminals could arrive soon. Particularly with the arrival of solid-state batteries.
