Once the laptop is recharged, do you leave the charger plugged into the electrical outlet? This is a very bad idea! A plugged-in charging cable uses energy, even if it is not connected to a device. This is what we call the no-load loss: the electrical circuit remains operational, even in the absence of a load.
In 2022, a survey by the consumer magazine “Kassensturz” clearly demonstrated that modern chargers consume between 0.008 and 0.125 watts when empty. This doesn't seem like much, but over a year, it represents a considerable waste of energy.
Patrick Janett, professor at the Graubünden University of Applied Sciences, carried out the following calculation for the SRF: if each Swiss person permanently plugged in two sockets consuming 0.125 watts when empty, the energy wasted would be enough to power 5,840 electric cars for a year.
Furthermore, leaving a charger plugged in permanently represents a potential fire risk. The risk is particularly high with cheap charging cables.
As soon as a charger heats up or buzzes, it must be replaced. But even high-quality chargers should be unplugged after use, to avoid overheating.
Using a power strip with switch: This allows you to unplug several devices at once.
Use smart electrical outlets: these can be controlled via an app, which is handy when you forget to unplug them before going out.
Place the charging station clearly: when it is clearly visible, the probability of forgetting to unplug devices is lower.
