As we write these lines, the French are preparing to celebrate Christmas. It is a festive moment where only joy finds its place. They are not yet thinking about the new year, and even less about the changes that come with it. Changes that concern pensions, salaries and even social assistance.

It's no surprise, every year it's the same thing. January 1 is the opportunity, for the government, to formalize notable developments. They sometimes concern a lot of citizens in . After the end-of-year holidays, the month of January is often very sad and gloomy. Will it be this year too?

Retirements: a good year to start the year

With the censorship of Michel Barnier's government, retirement pensions will benefit from the annual revaluation as provided for by law. There will be no reduction or change, as the former Prime Minister wanted. As a reminder, the former government opted for a revaluation of 0.9%.

Ultimately, it will never see the light of day. For retirees, this is good news. Indeed, the revaluation will be greater. It will be 2.2%. Certainly, it is less impressive than in January 2024, with an increase of 5.3%. However, this remains a welcome development in these times of crisis.

Note the revaluation, at the same time, of Aspathe Solidarity Allowance for the Elderly. This allowance, which concerns the most precarious retirees, will also increase by 2.2%.

Notable developments to be aware of

For retirees, this development is not a surprise. Indeed, the revaluation occurs each year on January 1st. On the other hand, certain future developments are new and may surprise more than one person.

We are thinking, for example, of the future free psychological consultations. In fact, all French people will benefit from 12 free sessions per year without the need for a medical prescription. Great news which proves that France takes the subject of mental health seriously.

As for RSA beneficiaries, a major change will come into play in January 2025. In fact, they will have to devote between 15 and 20 hours per week to integration activities (training, internships). This measure will be accompanied by automatic registration with France Travail.

On the bad news side, savers will suffer a loss in the PEL interest rate. Indeed, the latter will go from 2.25% to 1.75%. As for the minimum wage, we still do not know whether it will increase in January.

Motorists at the heart of certain changes

In addition to pensions and the RSA, let us also note the upcoming changes concerning unemployment benefits. The maximum compensation periods will change. 27 months for unemployed people aged 55 to 57, compared to 22.5 months for those aged 53 to 55.

Finally, motorists will be at the heart of a certain number of changes. The government continues to hunt down polluting vehicles. Its weapons, at this level, are Low Emission Zones (ZFE). They have been developing and tightening their rules for years.

In 2025, 30 large cities, such as and , will have to establish ZFEs. Large cities, such as and , prohibit Crit'Air 3 vehicles from driving. The goal is to encourage motorists to change cars.

Finally, motorcycles registered from 2025 will have to comply with new European standards to limit noise pollution.

From pensions to motorists, including social assistance recipients, a certain number of changes to be aware of await the French in 2025.
