Between 2010 and 2019, the number of days compensated increased by an average of 2.3% each year. This trend intensified between 2019 and 2023, with an average annual increase of 3.9%, excluding the impact of Covid.
10.2 billion euros in 2023
According to a study by the Drees (statistical services of social ministries) published on Friday December 13, sick leave in the private sector and among civil service contract workers increased significantly after 2019. This is independent of the health crisis. Between 2010 and 2019, days compensated for illness increased by 2.3% per year on average. However, between 2019 and 2023, excluding Covid-related shutdowns, this average annual increase reached 3.9%. At the same time, expenses linked to daily allowances have increased by 6.3% per year on average since 2019, reaching 10.2 billion euros in 2023, report French media like Europe 1.

Working conditions, physical or psychosocial constraints…
The study reveals that 60% of the increase in daily allowance expenditure is linked to economic (salaries) and demographic (aging) factors. It also notes an increase in 'claims', marked by sick leave longer and an increase in employees receiving compensation at equivalent ages. Between 2010 and 2023, the proportion of employees having at least one sick leave increased from 25% to 28%. The deterioration of working conditions, physical or psychosocial constraints, and sick leave unjustified could explain this phenomenon. Furthermore, days compensated for work accidents and occupational illnesses have increased significantly, reaching 4.1 billion euros in 2023.
