CATL is banking heavily on battery exchange stations for electric vehicles by offering its first standardized packs which can be rented from $50 per month

The world’s largest battery manufacturer, CATL, has announced that it is working hard to standardize packs at EV stations, to usher in an era of swaps that will take as little time as refueling of a gasoline car.

Robin Zeng, CEO of CATL, predicts that EV battery swaps will account for a third of all charging methods in the near future, along with home and public charging stations. The advantages of swappable batteries are many, since it only takes a few minutes to replace them instead of waiting half an hour or more on a charger, but for swap stations to proliferate, batteries must be standardized.

This is exactly what CATL is preparing to do by announcing its #20 and #25 power packs, whose name is inspired by the octane number of fuel at gas stations, such as #95 or #98. Packs #20 are available in 42 kWh LFP and 52 kWh nickel battery versions, while battery #25 has a capacity of 56 kWh LFP and 70 kWh ternary battery, respectively.

Rental of the smaller battery will start from the equivalent of $50 per month for a maximum monthly distance of 3,000 km (1,864 miles), or $60 for unlimited mileage.

CATL aims to install its new packs in 10,000 EV battery swap stations in the near future, and the longer-term goal is to have 30,000 such stations to establish its BaaS (battery-as) model. -a-service).

NIO is currently a leader in electric vehicle battery swapping and its cars can drive themselves to the nearest station, replace their battery with a new one in less than three minutes and drive away. It uses CATL packs with a 12-year warranty, and NIO is working to increase the EV battery warranty to 15 years and 85% capacity retention, to make electric vehicles a viable proposition in the EV market. used cars.

CATL clearly understands the merits of this proposal and is now campaigning for longer warranties for electric vehicles and the standardization of swap station batteries. She also said the standardized packs are designed in a way that they can take advantage of any new battery technology CATL develops in the future.
