The Zurich Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened criminal proceedings against Sanija Ameti. In September, the Liberal-Radical Party (PLR) politician shot an image of Jesus and Mary with an air gun. She briefly posted photos of the incident on Instagram, which sparked heavy criticism.
Criminal proceedings were opened for violating freedom of belief and worship, the spokesperson for the Zurich Public Prosecutor’s Office explained to the Watson information portal. Following the publication of the images on social networks, several criminal complaints were filed against the 32-year-old woman.
This weekend, the PLR politician spoke in detail about the incident in the media for the first time. In an interview with CH Media, she explained that she wanted to stay in politics. Abandoning her political involvement was never an option for her, said the co-president of Operation Libero.
After the shooting scandal on the image of the Virgin Mary, the 32-year-old woman had already presented a public apology. In her latest interview, she also said: “I am ashamed and I apologize for this.”
During the interview, she also linked her brother’s death to the publication of the shooting drill. “It’s a contextualization of what happened, not a justification,” Ameti said.
As she shot, she thought of her brother. “My brother was killed before we left,” said the Bosnia-Herzegovina-born lawyer. She tried to escape this memory for a long time.
During the shooting exercise, pain appeared in her. “I couldn’t bear the pain alone and wanted to turn it off. And apparently I didn’t know where to put it except post it,” she said. It was “impulsive and thoughtless”./SRF
