The unemployment rate rose to 13.6% nationally with an alarming rate of 50.3% among urban youth aged 15 to 24 who are not pursuing studies. These figures are the results of the interweaving of several factors, including academic failure, lack of professional experience, as well as social factors.
These figures revealed by the governor of Bank Al Maghrib, Abdellatif Jouahri, demonstrate a worrying trend which combines both academic failure and the unwillingness to exercise professional activity among young people in this age group, 50% of whom are non-employees.
This young population represents a significant part of Moroccan society, and its difficulty in accessing the job market creates a vulnerable and frustrated generation, often excluded from economic opportunities due to their lack of qualifications. The jobs open to them often fall short of their expectations and salary expectations.
This can have consequences on their professional and personal future, sometimes fueling tensions in society, feelings of social injustice and can create marginalization, or even lead to the phenomenon of migration abroad in search of better prospects.
This worrying rate of unemployment in this age category has several explanations and factors favoring this situation. We can cite in particular an education system which does not always meet the needs of the job market, as well as an insufficient offer of internships and jobs in sectors which can absorb this young and qualified workforce. , which limits their rate of future employability.
Regarding the overall unemployment rate, it is distributed between 7.4% in rural areas and 17% in cities. But among young people, the rate continues to increase, said the governor of the central bank.
The unemployment rate in 10 years has increased from 16% to 21.3%, indicate figures based on the latest statistics from the High Commission for Planning (HCP). Some regions are more affected than others, the HCP revealed that the region of Guelmim-Oued Noun and that of Oriental are the most affected by unemployment with rates of 31.5 and 30.4% respectively. , in Casablanca-Settat it reaches 18.8% of the active population, compared to 19.6% in Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma and 19.7% in the Souss-Massa region.
The decline in this rate in Morocco is dependent on the increase in the growth rate and the growth of wealth and a better distribution of it across the country.
Positive figures erase this shadow since in the third quarter of the current year, and for the first time, positive figures were recorded in terms of job creation, thanks to approximately 257,000 job opportunities offered compared to the loss of 297,000 jobs during the same period the previous year.
Furthermore, during the third quarter of 2024, a total of 271,000 job seekers were also registered, and the activity rate increased by 0.4 points compared to 2023 to reach 43.6%, and several sectors recorded job creation or job maintenance
With the exception of the agricultural sector which recorded a loss of 124,000 jobs, the services sector recorded 258,000 jobs, 57,000 in the construction and public works sector, and 23,000 jobs in the industrial sector, including traditional industry. .
