At the event, Megan Lim, Director of Economic Strategy of Access Partnership, noted that the value of Vietnam’s B2C (Business-to-Consumer) e-commerce exports reached VND86 trillion in 2023. It predicts that this value will reach 145.2 billion VND (5.8 billion USD) by 2028, with MSMEs contributing 25%.
Among SMEs participating in cross-border e-commerce that took part in the survey, 93% say they could not export without relying on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon Global Selling, Alibaba or eBay. Additionally, 65% said more than half of their B2C online sales come from overseas markets, with 50% expecting growth of more than 20% in their total retail sales in the next five years.
Megan Lim, however, highlighted several major obstacles that hinder the development of SME investments in this promising sector, notably high logistics costs, the shortage of qualified talent and lack of knowledge of foreign markets.

VECOM Secretary General Tran Van Trong said that since 2017, VECOM has organized several cross-border e-commerce forums with hot topics that have had a significant impact. It also established the Online Export Support Alliance aimed at creating an ecosystem of support for businesses engaged in online export activities.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is also accelerating the development of a draft master plan on the national development of e-commerce for the period 2026-2030. This strategic plan positions online exporting as a fundamental pillar of e-commerce development, outlining specific objectives, policies and solutions to equip MSMEs with the tools needed to conquer foreign markets online.
VECOM’s Vietnam E-commerce Index 2024 report revealed that the sector’s growth rate in 2023 increased by more than 25% compared to 2022, reaching USD 25 billion. Of this, the online retail sector accounted for USD 17.3 billion, with e-commerce accounting for around 10% of total retail sales of goods and services to consumers.
